Earlier this week during our English Teachers' Workshop, we discussed an article about North Korea and nuclear weapons. We discussed the North-South relations, US-NK relations, etc. The discussion was very interesting! Maybe I'll have a "part 2" to discuss the topic more. Anyway, I took some notes. They are a little scatter-brained, but it will give you a sense of what the South Koreans think about the situation with North Korea:
NK is desperate, so SK should help w/ humanitarian aid. In the long run, the 2 countries will unify. But unification will be expensive because of the large disparity in the quality of life. (Koreans should learn from Germany's reunification)
SK invests in NK industrial areas. How could SK answer to future question by NK: "Why didn't you help us when you were so rich and we were so poor?" Conservative party doesn't want to help.
Nuclear reactors as proof of desperation. Their last resort as a threat. NK wants to be part of a global community. 'desparate times cal for desparate measures" = cat corners a rat, the rat will attack (saying in korean)
Kim Jong Il cuts access to outside world to prevent a collapse.
Very upset that NK is on Bush's "Axis of Evil". Bush should be the "Axis of Evil" if anyone is.
